| Shortly after independence, a group of visionaries led by Professor VKRV Rao, and supported by India's first Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru, launched a project to create a center for advanced learning and research in the social sciences that was comparable to the best in the world and worthy of the newly emergent subcontinent.
