Social, Economic and Political Change
A web site of:
The Global Social Change Research Project
The basic question of interest is "Why does society develop the way that it does?"  How did the various political systems develop, how do different customs and social systems come about.  Some specific topics include: what is globalization and how is it happening, why did industrialization first occur in Europe, how far will democratization spread and in what forms.

This site is our attempt to study those questions.  We present information that looks at long term, large scale changes in social, political and economic systems at the national and international levels.  This site presents links to sites with theories, approaches, data and research.  The principal aim is to present information that can be used to explain historical change, growth and development.

Any comments or suggestions are welcome. Send email to    gsociology  at  yahoo dot com

I've started an Announcements for Sociology forum at Sociopranos. Anyone can post any annoucement about new conferences, books, research, websites, jobs, funding, reports, data, etc., that may be of interest to sociologists or any other social scientists. I'll start a new thread every month. See the press release forum   http://www.sociopranos.com/forums/forum-view.asp?forumid=11   thread labeled "July 2004 sociology announcements".

Reports   by Shackman, Liu and Wang.  Includes a summary/review of theories of change and review of the current world situation, reports on major global socio-demographic, economic and political change, the Basic Guides to the World, and other work.

Data sets and Presentions   Data sets used in our reports, other public domain data sets, demography, economic, energy, and presentations based on these data sets. We hope these might be useful for teaching and research.

Theory   Links to approaches and theories or reviews of theories of change, and general essays about change.

Data   The process of change depends on demographics, political and economic structures, among other factors.  This section links to sites with free data, e.g., population, economics, political systems data, long term data, and some analysis of long term data.

Research    about social change, economic growth, related topics.  This section also includes discussion papers and essays that are not exactly research, not exactly reviews of theories of change, but are useful papers.

National Profiles    Understanding change requires some knowledge of the state of the world, present and past.  These sites present profiles of countries or regions, or have links to profiles.  Some of the pages and links also include brief histories of countries or regions.

History    These sites present more detailed history, of countries, regions, the world, or links to more detailed history, or lists of good history books and articles.  See also the links page with some links to links of history.

Organizations   Links to organizations of interest.

Future    These sites are about trying to understand the future, forecasting or other means.

Links   Pages that are links to links.

Bibliographies and syllabi    Syllabi of courses in social change or related topics, lists of readings about change.  This page can be a place to share syllabi, for example, among people who teach classes on social change.

Other pages that don't exactly fit into above categories.

Software   These programs may be useful.  Statistics, editors, other.

Brand new project:
Our Current Knowledge   http://bestweknow.icaap.org/
This site will present a series of essays summarizing our current knowledge about different global issues. These essays are intended for the general audience, so should be useful for anyone; students, researchers, or anyone interested in finding out what we know.

Also, here is an interesting site, not related to Social Change
Links to pictures, movies, virtual postcards, midi music files, for kids to look at or listen to. Well anyway, my kid likes to look at these.
