The India environment portal is a free-to-use virtual gateway for information on environment and development, consisting of 0.4 million records (news, reports, documents, research papers, directory, opinions, statistics, etc).  Each and every record is tagged using a unique thesaurus consisting of more than 8,000 environmental and geographical keywords. It was launched by Centre for Science and Environment with support from the National Knowledge Commission in August 2008.Within such a short span it is  recognized amongst the fourth largest portal on environment and has been successful in registering more than 9 million hits per month and 6000 visitors every day.

1. News service: Provides news from 80 newspapers (60 Indian, 20 South Asian and international). The portal focuses specially on Indian newspapers and is the only one of its kind that provides regional environment news from almost every region of India.

2. Reports- Proactively sources important reports/documents on environment/development and provides open access for use by all.

3. Link to government institutions - The directory of selected government organizations on the portal attempts to provide easy access to categorized/sorted information on a selection of government organizations (news, reports, and data about or by them)
